Now that the weather is getting cooler, this is a great time to make these tasty treats for our feathered friends.  This is something fun that my daughter and I enjoyed making together when she was little.   This recipe easily makes two dozen…so we always had several to give away to friends and neighbors.

What you need to make these tweet, tweet treats:

¾ cup flour

½ cup water

1 envelope unflavored gelatin

3 tbsp. corn syrup

4 cups of birdseed

Molds (muffin tin or cookie cutters)

Nonstick spray

Plastic straw

Waxed paper

Ribbon/string

  1. Combine the flour, water, gelatin and corn syrup in a large bowl. Then add the birdseed to the bowl.
  2. Spray your molds with cooking spray, and spoon birdseed mixture into each mold. Pack it down top.
  3. Poke a hole through top of each birdseed mold using a drinking straw.img_3535
  4. Leave the birdseed mixture in the molds for three hours. Then, remove the straws and lay out a sheet of waxed paper. Gently remove the hardened ornaments from the mold, and place them on the wax paper upside down. Allow them to dry for at least two to three more hours, over night.
  5. Cut your ribbon and put it through the hole.
  6. ENJOY watching the birds!

Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow – Snow Ice Cream

Snow is making its way to the midwest today.  I thought this would be a perfect recipe to post on this snowy day.  This is one of my children’s favorite recipe that they always enjoy making during this cold season.

What you need to make this recipe:

About 6 cups of snow

1/2 cup of white sugar

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1 cup milk

  1. Start with a large bowl of clean snow then stir in sugar, vanilla and milk (add enough milk for desired consistency).

  2. It melts very fast so you will want to serve it immediately.
  3. Enjoy!

 

 

Gobble, Gobble…Rice Krispie Turkeys

Rice Crispy Turkey Treats

To make Rice Crispy Turkey Treat you need:

3 TBLS butter

One package of marshmallows (10 oz)

6 cups of Kellogg’s Rice Krispie cereal

Candy Corn

Hershey Kisses

M&M

Candy eyes

Semi-sweet chocolate chips

  1. In microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on High for 3 minutes (stir every 2 minutes until marshmallows are melted.
  2. Remove from heat.  Add Kellogg’s Rice Krispie cereal to marshmallow mixture.
  3. Using buttered spatula evenly press mixture into pan that is coated with cooking spray (or butter)
  4. Use circle cookie cutter or I use canning rim to make my turkey treat body.IMG_7070
  5. Melt semi-sweet chocolate chips in a small bowl.
  6. I use a fork (or toothpick) and add the melted chocolate chips (glue to hold the candy in place) to the rice krispie treat.
  7. Place the candy on top of the treat.
  8. This recipe makes round 16 rice krispie turkeys.

Candy Planes

My daughter and I made this cute little candy planes for my little nephews.  It is a very simple and fun project to make.

What you need:

Stick gum

Rubberbands

Lifesavers

Smarty candy

Heart or shiny Paper

Glue Stick

  1. Wrap the decorative paper around the stick of gum.IMG_5899
  2. Take the rubberband and pull threw the holes of the two pieces of lifesaver candy.
  3. Next slide the stick of gum between the rubberband.IMG_5900
  4. Between the lifesaver candy and the stick of gum add the smarty candy.
  5. Add the fun details to the plane… the tag “You make my (heart shape) soar.  Happy Valentine’s Day! “IMG_5902

Cake in a Cup

Very easy to make…when you want just a small snack and not the temptation of a whole cake.

2 Tbsp Chocolate Cake Mix

1 Tbsp semi-sweet Chocolate chip

2 Tbsp of water

  1. Add all ingredience into a small microwave bowl.IMG_6360_2
  2. Microwave for 1 minute.
  3. You’re done.  Can top with frosting or powder sugar.IMG_6361
  4. Can’t get any easier than that.
  5. Enjoy!

Witch’s Halloween Broom

What you need to make this Halloween project: 

Two brown lunch bags

Halloween Ribbon

Candy (to put in bag)

Giant Pix Stick (Oriental Trade Company is where I brought the candy pix sticks.)

Scissors

Hot glue gun

 

Simple Halloween Witch”s Broom Instructions:

  1. One of the lunch bags cut strips to the bottom of the bag.
  2. Next hot glue the second lunch bag on top of the sliced bags.  See below example.IMG_4877
  3. Hot glue the Giant Pix Stick to the side of the lunch bag.  See example.IMG_4878
  4. Fill up bag with treats and tie it with a fun Halloween ribbon.

Worms in Dirt Pudding Cup

There is no cooking require with this recipe.  It is a perfect activtity that your younger child will love to help make and eat. In the above photo is featuring the worms in dirt pudding cups that my daughter made.  They didn’t last long in my house…about five seconds later all four cups were empty.  This recipe makes four yummy worms in dirt pudding cups.

Ingredients needed to make this recipe:

Instant Chocolate Pudding

2 cups of skim milk

Gummy Worms

10 Oreo cookies

4 plastic clear cups

  1. The first step is to make dirt.  Place five Oreo cookies into small blender – crush cookies  until they are fine crumbs.
  2. Place mixture into plastic cup. (first layer)
  3. Next in bowl add pudding mix and 2 cups cold milk with whisk 2 min.
  4. Add next layer the chocolate pudding in plastic cup. (second layer)
  5. Crush up five more Oreo cookies and add crush cookies in cup. (third layer)
  6. Place gummy worms on top.photo

Duct Tape Art

At my daughter’s school a lot of the kids are using duct tape to make all kinds of stuff.  She said a couple kids made their own pencil holder out of duct tape and soup cans.  So this weekend she wanted to give it a try.  This is what we came up with…made a iPod/iPhone case and pencil holder.  It was made out of a recycled can, cardboard, and duct tape.

 

Duct Tape Pencil Holder:

  1. Clean out can & take label off.
  2. Add duct tape around can and decorate.

  1. We used aOatmeal Cookie box…cut one side of the box.  See example.  IMG_0838
  2. Start with adding duct tape in the inside, then work on the outside.
  3. To connect the sides we used a stripe of duct tape.
  4. We also used as a fastener on the top of the case – black velcro.

Halloween Candy Robots

This candy robot craft is fun to make and eat!

Here is what you need to make one robot:

  • 1 Nerds candy
  • 3 Skittles candy
  • 3 Starburst candy
  • 2 craft eyes
  • hot glue gun

  1. Hot glue two Starburst candy to the bottom of the Nerds box to make the feet.  Next glue one Starburst candy to the top of the box to make the robot head.
  2. Simply hot glue the a Skittle on the top of the Starburst.  Also glue two Skittles on the side of the Nerd box for arms.
  3. Then hot glue the craft eyes on the Starburst robot head.
  4. I used Print Explosion Deluxe software to create the cute labels – for Halloween or Valentine Day.

 

Chocolate Christmas Spoons

The ingredients you will need to make the Sweet Chocolate Spoons:

Plastic Spoons

6 block of almond bark/ or chocolate bark/ or chocolate chips

small M&Ms, Christmas sprinkles and/or decorations

  1. Place 1/2 cup almond bark or chocolate chips a microwave safe bowl.
  2. Heat in microwave in 1 min intervals, stirring after each intervals.  I normally takes 2 to 3 minutes till it is melted and smooth.
  3. Dip plastic spoons into melted mixture and place on wax paper .
  4. Next add M&M, Christmas sprinkles and Christmas candy decorations.IMG_3767
  5. Repeat dipping  and decorating process.IMG_3766
  6. Chill until firm before wrapping individually.
  7. I used a Christmas decorated plastic bag that I bought at Dollar Tree
  8. Next you will need to cut this bag into smaller squares.
  9. Wrapped the plastic squares around the spoon.
  10. Tight with Christmas color plastic ribbon around the spoon.  I used my scissors to make the curls.
  11. Place chocolate spoons in a mug with some of your favorite packaged hot chocolate.

Snowman Marshmallow Pops

What you need to make the Marshmallow Pops:

10 oz. bag marshmallows

skewers or lollipop sticks ( lollipop sticks – are sold at Michaels or Hobby Lobby, be a  better option because it doesn’t have the sharp end.)

    1. Place three marshmallows on a skewer or lollipop sticks.IMG_3647IMG_3649
    2. Melt the candle dips in the microwave bowl for 1 to 2 minutes.  With thespatula cover the threemarshmallows.IMG_3630
  1. Next add the candy decorations.
  2. Let them dry in a glass.
  3. I wrapped them up and add a cute tag.

 

Scented Playdough

The ingredients you need to make scented playdough:


1 Cup white flour

1/2 Cup of salt

2 Tbls. Cream of Tartar

2 Tbls. Vegetable Oil

1 Cup warm water

1 three oz. pkg. Jello (any flavor)

  1. Combine ingredients and cook over medium heat until it thickens and pulls away from the sides of the pot and becomes dull.  See photo example below.    IMG_3503
  2. It burns easily so don’t put over too high of heat and keep stirring.IMG_3507
  3. Mold and kneed until cool enough for kids to touch.
  4. Store in a plastic bag.

 

Popcorn Balls

1/2 stick of Margarine

4 Qts of cooked Popcorn

10 oz Marshmallows

Food Coloring

  1. In a  saucepan over medium heat, combine the margaine and marshmallows.  Then add food coloring and carefully combine the hot mixture with the popcorn, coating each kernel.
  2. Wait a few minutes till mixture cools, it seems to stick better when it is not so hot.  Grease hands with butter and shape coated popcorn into balls. Wrap with cellophane, plastic wrap or baggies and store at room temperature.

Halloween Treat Box

I made this Halloween treat box for my son in college.  Here are the steps to make it:

  1. The box is a orange Nike shoe box.
  2. The Halloween decoration on the top of the box came from a HyVee brown bag.   I cut out the cute Halloween decoration that was in the front of the HyVee bag.  Then I glued it to the top of the box.
  3. I added some fall color tissue paper and filled it up with my child’s favorite homemade treats.
  4. I used black tape on the side of the box to close it.

Cute Halloween Hersheys Candybar Bat-

I got the idea for this cute Halloween candybar bat from this site – http://www.skiptomylou.org/2009/10/14/candy-bar-covers/.  The Skip to my Lou blog site has the step by step directions for making this cute bat.  Plus it also has the pattern for the paper bat and the template for the cute Halloween circle label.  It is a fun craft project that is very easy to make!
